New video adapters by NVidia are introduced

NVidia has represented new generation graphic adapters powered by the processors of Maxwell architecture – GeForce GTX 980 and GeForce GTX 970.

New video cards are based on GM204 chips of NVidia Maxwell architecture, which are arranged on silicon crystals within the area of 398 square millimeters with 5.2 billion transistors included. It is to be recalled that GK104 chips that are applied in GTX680 and GTX770 video cards have an area of 298 square millimeters with 3.54 billion transistors. However, GK110 graphic processor that is used by more high-speed GTX 780/780 Ti/TITAN video adapters is much larger – its area is 561 square millimeters with 7.1 transistors.

Maxwell is the tenth generation of graphic architectures, which replaced Kepler. Maxwell has been already used for GeForce GTX 750/750 Ti video cards, although it managed to fulfill its potential to the full only in GeForce GTX 980/970.

Innovative devices on the basis of GM204 offer Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI) technology that brings about dynamic lighting in real-time mode. Earlier, significant capabilities of CPU were needed for this. But now, VXGI hardware allows shifting this loading off to GPU.

Maxwell video cards can operate in the MFAA (Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Antialiasing) mode. It provides a user with images of higher quality at less energy resources expenditures of GPU.

Dynamic Super Resolution technology makes images on the monitors of less than 4K resolution more qualitative. The image is rendered at the resolution that exceeds the actual one onscreen.

GeForce GTX 980 and GeForce GTX 970 are equipped with 256-bit memory bus and have 4 GB local RAM. GDDR5 microcircuits operate at 7.000 MHz, providing discharge capacity at 224.4 GB/sec. Reference adapters of GeForce GTX 980/970 are designed in the usual for top NVidia devices way. At the front of PCB, 8 memory microcircuits are disposed. There are two 6-pin connectors for additional power supply. High energy efficiency is Maxwell devices’ advantage. Adapters are supplied with 5 video outputs. DVI-I (Dual Link), three DisplayPorts 1.2 and full-format HDMI are on the interface panel. NVidia’s new video cards are the first devices supporting HDMI 2.0. According to the new specification, video output provides with 4K-resolution, 60 GHz-update rate image.

The first deliveries of GeForce GTX 980 and GeForce GTX 970 have already begun. In the American market, GeForce GTX 980 costs $549; GeForce GTX 970 is sold for $329.
