Realtek Network & Wireless Cards

Realtek is likely to be the first brand that occurs to our mind when it comes about integrated circuits (IC). Despite global fame, the company is fabless and employs only 2.000 workers, the better part of whom specializes in research and development. Such seeming ‘modesty’ did not prevent this semiconductor corporation to win favor of the majority OEMs and hardware manufacturers.

Today Realtek ships its components throughout the world, demonstrating their superior perfection in each detail. All product lines might be divided into three broad categories:

  • computer peripheral IC. This class includes audio codecs (AC’97/High Definition Audio), IEEE 1394 controllers, card reader controllers, clock generators (solutions for SiS/Via chipsets), audio amplifiers, PC camera controllers (for USB 2.0/3.0 interface);
  • multimedia IC category embraces controllers for LCD monitors, LCD TV and Digital Media Processors;
  • communications network IC. This division offers network interface chips (including gigabit Ethernet ones), controllers for gateway (residential and WLAN AP), broadband access, network switch, ADSL routers, as well as wireless LAN, PHYceivers, DTV demodulators, solutions for digital home centers.
Realtek’s tradition of excellence resulted in the expansion of facilities from Hsinchu Science Park in Taiwan to Singapore, where it established in June 2014 a subsidiary focusing on smart home applications and Internet of Things. Still, the company continues implementing its ICs into top-tier 4K2K UHD TVs, high-resolution smartphones and tablets.

The impact of the corporation into the development of multimedia industry can’t be overestimated. Being practically a pioneer in file compression/decompression field, the designer totally transformed the concept of how voluminous audio/video files are stored and reproduced. Realtek’s codecs incorporate analog-to-digital and backward functions in a single chip. What is more, its codecs come as a software piece – a dedicated algorithm that compresses and decompresses files.
